Navy mine warfare center in MS has new CO from WA

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. (AP) — An officer from Vancouver, Wash., is the new head of the Naval Oceanography Mine Warfare Center based at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.

A news release says Cmdr. Chris Gabriel relieved Cmdr. Matthew Borbash of Hattiesburg as commanding officer on Oct. 7.

Gabriel has a bachelor’s degree in geology from Washington State University and a master’s in meteorology and oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School. He comes to the mine warfare center after serving on the staff of U.S. Africa Command.

Borbash has a bachelor’s degree in meteorology at from North Carolina State University and master’s degrees in meteorology and physical oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School. He is now director of expeditionary warfare at the Naval Oceanography Operations Command, also based at Stennis.
