LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) — About 30 students from a half-dozen southwest Washington high schools are taking part in a program that teaches science lessons at Mount St. Helens.

The Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/r6X8q2 ) they took soil and water samples this week in the volcano blast zone. They’re meeting at a Lower Columbia College lab to compare the samples with others from the Longview area.

The program is organized by the Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council and funded by a federal Labor Department grant to introduce students to possible careers in science.
