NEW YORK (AP) — Irina Falconi’s stirring run at the U.S. Open ended with a thud.

The 79th-ranked American lost 6-0, 6-1 to 22nd-seeded Sabine Lisicki in 52 minutes in the third round Friday. Falconi had never won a Grand Slam match before this week, which included an upset of 14th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova in the second round at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Lisicki never took the court in the second round, advancing when Venus Williams withdrew because of illness. The German, a Wimbledon semifinalist, had never been past the second round at the U.S. Open. She had 27 winners Friday.
