HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — The start of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway is being delayed by rain.
The AdvoCare 500 was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, but rain began moving into the area during the afternoon from the outer bands of Tropical Storm Lee. That storm pounded the Gulf Coast with more than a foot of rain and was expected to bring severe storms to Atlanta on Monday.
NASCAR has sent dryers back on the track, even though a light drizzle is still falling at about the time the race was supposed to begin. Forecasters are predicting a break in the rain and officials say “they will make every effort to get the race in.”
Given the forecast, the race would likely have to be run on Tuesday if it’s postponed.
