NEW YORK (AP) — Andy Roddick’s start-and-stop match against David Ferrer at the U.S. Open was moved to a 584-seat court because of water gathering behind a baseline at one of the main stadiums Thursday, while Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray reached the quarterfinals.
After two rain-soaked days at Flushing Meadows left nerves frayed and the schedule in disarray, the sun made an appearance. That allowed four fourth-round men’s matches — originally supposed to be played Tuesday, they were suspended after 15 minutes Wednesday — to get going in earnest, finally.
Nadal, the defending champion, beat Gilles Muller 7-6 (1), 6-1, 6-2, and Murray eliminated Donald Young 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. But Roddick and Ferrer played less than 10 minutes in Louis Armstrong Stadium before being sent to Court 13.
