ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — An official says Kurdish rebels have carried out simultaneous attacks on a police station and a paramilitary police force headquarters near the Iraqi border Turkey, killing three civilians.
Gov. Muammer Turker says Monday 10 soldiers were also injured in the attack late Sunday in the mainly Kurdish Hakkari province that borders Iraq. He gave no other details.
The private Dogan news agency said the rebels fired on the two buildings, touching off a two-hour long clash with the security forces. It said three civilians died in the crossfire.
It said the military immediately launched an operation, backed with attack helicopters, to catch the rebels.
The rebels are fighting for autonomy in southeast Turkey. Tens of thousands of people have died in the conflict since 1984.
