ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays have promoted top pitching prospect Matt Moore from the minors as they try to rally down the stretch for a playoff berth.
The Rays purchased Moore’s contract from Triple-A Durham on Sunday night, hours after completing a three-game sweep of Boston that moved them within 312 games of the AL wild card leaders.
The 22-year-old Moore will join the Rays in time for Monday night’s game at Baltimore. The left-hander went 12-3 with a 1.92 ERA in 27 combined starts for Double-A Montgomery and Durham. His 210 strikeouts broke the franchise record for a minor leaguer.
To make room for Moore on the 40-man roster, the Rays will make a corresponding move Monday.
