BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Browns first-year coach Pat Shurmur has accepted responsibility for the quick-snap play the Cincinnati Bengals used to beat Cleveland in the season opener.
Shurmur said someone should have called timeout before Bengals quarterback Bruce Gradkowski could throw a 41-yard touchdown pass to rookie A.J. Green in the fourth quarter of Cincinnati’s 27-17 win. Shurmur said blame can be shared by “me, the sideline and the players in the huddle.”
Shurmur said there is no excuse for Green not being covered on the play. Shurmur would not say if he has asked the NFL to review the play.
Despite the tough loss, Shurmur said it would do no good to come in Monday “and throw around furniture.” He saw enough positives on Sunday to believe the Browns can have a solid season.
