SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The engine of a locomotive pulling freight cars through downtown Spokane caught fire and left a thick trial of smoke in the area.

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman said the engine of one of three locomotives pulling the train caught fire at about 10 on Monday morning.

Railroad spokesman Gus Melonas says the crew quickly extinguished the fire and the train continued to its way to Pasco, where the locomotive will be inspected.

The locomotives were towing 62 loads of general freight and 37 empty cars.
