Top-seeded Almagro advances in Malaysian Open

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Top-seeded Nicolas Almagro advanced to the Malaysian Open quarterfinals, beating Spanish player Albert Ramos 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) on Thursday.

The 11th-ranked Almagro set up a match against eighth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 winner over Germany’s Philipp Petzschner.

Serbia’s Viktor Troicki also advanced, topping Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-1, 6-4. The second-seeded Troicki saved all three break points he faced. Troicki will play fourth-seeded Jurgen Melzer.

Third-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia had a 6-2, 6-4 win over Flavio Cipolla of Italy. Tipsarevic will face fifth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, a 6-3, 7-6 (2) winner over Poland’s Lukasz Kubot.
