ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — Zack Imhoff had 3.5 of Cornell’s eight sacks in a solid defensive performance by the Big Red, which routed Wagner 31-7 on Saturday.

Imhoff also had two forced fumbles and blocked a punt for Cornell (2-1), which tallied their most sacks since a record 10 at Harvard in 1992.

The defense provided excellent field position for Cornell, as all five of the Big Red’s scoring plays started in Wagner territory. Jeff Mathews threw for three of those touchdowns and rushed for another.

Matthews, who became the first Cornell quarterback to throw for three TDs in a game since 2008, was 18 of 26 with 197 yards. He threw to eight different receivers, including Shane Savage for two touchdowns.

Wagner (1-4), which finished with 274 yards of offense, was led by Dominique Williams with 137 yards on 26 carries, including a 1-yard TD early in the fourth quarter.
