SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Department of Education says nearly 85,000 students — about 13 percent of the overall student population — are in special education programs.

The number is up about 1,000 students from last year.

The special education figures were released Wednesday in a report to the federal government to show how the state is complying with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

A child is eligible for special education if parents and professionals determine the child has a disability.
