HAZEL DELL — In a Good Friday memorial, the First Congregational United Church of Christ will offer a candlelight vigil in memory of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old who was fatally shot in February in Florida.
The vigil will run from noon to 7 p.m. Friday, April 6, in the church at 1220 N.E. 68th St. in Hazel Dell. The public is invited to come, light a candle on an altar for Martin and offer a prayer.
The church’s pastor, the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt, said racial profiling, fears and stereotyping are common in the Vancouver area. He cited the case of Bethany Storro who, lying to police, first described her fictitious acid attacker as black.
Co-sponsors include the Washington Commission on African-American Affairs and the Urban Entrepreneur Network.
