SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Mason County sheriff’s officers say human remains found in a Salem, Ore., home are those of a fetus rather than a newborn child, as initially believed. They say they’ve talked with a woman who told them she suffered a miscarriage this week.

Sheriff’s spokesman Don Thomson said Friday that an autopsy showed the remains were those of a 24- or 25-week-old fetus. With tips from the public, detectives located and interviewed a woman who reportedly told them she suffered a miscarriage on Wednesday.

The spokesman says the investigation is being termed a medical incident at the moment. Thomson says the autopsy results and detectives’ reports will be sent to the district attorney’s office for review.
