COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Sam Cassell Jr. has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Maryland, coach Mark Turgeon said Monday.

Cassell is the son of former NBA guard Sam Cassell, who is now an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards.

Cassell played this season at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass.

He chose Maryland over the University of South Florida, Villanova and Florida State. Cassell says he picked Maryland because “it’s close to home so all my family and friends can see me play.”

Cassell averaged over 16 points a game for Notre Dame Prep this season. He had a 28-point game against Brewster Academy in the national prep tournament and scored 12 points in the Capital Classic all-star game to help the U.S. All-Stars to a 105-93 win.
