Three Clark County residents were arrested after allegedly trying to steal an ATM machine from the Lacamas Community Credit Union in Stevenson early Tuesday.

Christopher Hewitt, 24, of Vancouver and Battle Ground residents Benjamin Milam, 21, and Malanyon Giles, 22, were arrested on suspicion of first-degree attempted theft and first-degree malicious mischief, according to a Skamania County Sheriff’s Office bulletin. The three were booked into the Skamania County Jail.

Skamania sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of three people trying to break into an ATM machine around 3:30 a.m. at the credit union at 147 First St. in Stevenson. They saw a vehicle leaving the area westbound on state Highway 14 and notified Washington State Patrol, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Washougal police.

Washougal officers Zane Freschette and Kyle Day stopped the car on Gibson Road just off Highway 14, said Cmdr. Allen Cook. Washougal police detained the suspects until Skamania deputies could arrive.

Bank officials identified Hewitt, Milam and Giles using surveillance video, the release said.
