Reds consider promoting minor-league speedster

PEARL, Miss. (AP) — Billy Hamilton has proven he’s the most dangerous man on the basepaths in the minor leagues.

Now the 21-year-old would like to test those wheels in the big leagues and swipe a few bags for the Cincinnati Reds during the playoff push. He’s certainly giving general manager Walt Jocketty plenty of reasons — 149 to be exact — to bring him up to the big leagues when rosters expand Sept. 1.

Jocketty is considering the move, but hasn’t made a decision. Hamilton has stolen 149 bases this season — a record for minor league teams affiliated with MLB organizations.

There are a few factors working against Hamilton: He’s been in Double-A less than two months and he’s not on the 40-man roster. But he’s so fast it may not matter.
