A 22-year-old woman appeared in Clark County Superior Court on Monday on suspicion of the kidnapping, robbery and attempted murder of an Oregon man in the early morning of Nov. 28 near Vancouver Lake.
Joanna Kyrstin May Speaks was held on $250,000 bail. Judge Barbara Johnson scheduled Speaks’ arraignment for Dec. 14. Speaks, dressed in a dark green suicide smock, indicated she would hire an attorney rather than ask the court to appoint one.
Another suspect, Pedro “Junior” Godinez Jr., 19, remains at large. He is alleged to be Speaks’ boyfriend.
Here’s what police think happened, according to court documents:
A man named Freddie Landstrom told police he met Speaks about six weeks ago while walking in Milwaukie, Ore., according to a probable cause affidavit. Landstrom said Speaks said she was destitute, so he offered to pay her $50 to clean his house. He indicated she accepted the offer and cleaned the home the next day, according to the affidavit.
Landstrom said he didn’t hear from her again until early Nov. 28, when Speaks allegedly called him and invited him to her apartment in East Vancouver. When Landstrom arrived, Speaks directed him into a bedroom, the affidavit stated. A Hispanic man then entered the bedroom. The man told Speaks to leave the bedroom and pointed a gun at Landstrom, stating that he was Speaks’ boyfriend, according to the affidavit. The man ordered Landstrom at gunpoint to drive to an area on Lower River Road in Landstrom’s 2012 Nissan Sentra.
Once at Vancouver Lake, the man ordered Landstrom to get on his knees and to give the man his ATM card and personal identification number. The man accused Landstrom of lying about the number and shot him in the head, shoulder, abdomen and hand with the gun. The documents do not specify what kind of gun was used.
Landstrom grabbed the gun, and the two struggled, according to the affidavit. Landstrom was able to flee through a swamp west to the marina, where he contacted a resident who called 911.
Father gives details
Speaks first claimed, in a police interview, that Landstrom only stayed at her apartment for 30 minutes to an hour because her children were awake, and that he left on his own accord.
However, Speaks’ father told police that she had lured Landstrom to the apartment so that her boyfriend could rob him, according to the affidavit. He also allegedly told police his daughter hid Landstrom’s wallet, a pistol holster and other evidence in soiled baby diapers and flushed the contents of the wallet down the toilet.
The remaining suspect, Godinez, is 5-foot-10 inches and 220 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call 911.
