INNSBRUCK, Austria (AP) — Marlies Schild of Austria will be out three months following knee surgery and won’t be able to defend her world slalom title in her home country in February.
The Austrian ski federation says Schild had surgery Friday in Innsbruck for a torn collateral ligament in her right knee. Schild was hurt Thursday during training at the World Cup slalom in Are, Sweden.
The world championships are Feb. 5-17 in Schladming. Schild also missed the world championships in 2009 in Val d’Isere, France, because of an injury but came back to win the world title in 2011 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
Schild is a four-time World Cup slalom champion. She has won 33 races in the discipline, one short of matching Vreni Schneider’s record.
