Letter: Encourage marriage equality

The Columbian
Published: February 1, 2012, 4:00pm

I applaud Gov. Chris Gregoire for announcing her support of civil marriage equality. The freedom to marry the person you love will help protect and strengthen Washington families. Marriage equality needs all the support it can get. Denying rights to others should not be tolerated. No family should be confronted with additional burdens to care for their loved ones, especially with today’s tough economic climate.

From emergency hospitalizations, to shared health insurance plans, to raising children, marriage guarantees the rights of all families to care for their loved ones.

There’s no reason to deny this right to loving couples who are also taxpayers. I think all people, gay and straight, should have this right. I encourage the state Legislature to vote for love, compassion and respect in 2012.
