Mike Stoops expects few changes to Sooners defense

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma’s approach to stopping opponents doesn’t figure to be much different under new defensive coordinator Mike Stoops.

Stoops says he’s had a few days to meet with new linebackers coach Tim Kish and discuss what changes they might bring over from the schemes they ran at Arizona. He doesn’t expect major changes, which is natural since he oversaw the defense at Oklahoma along with former coordinator Brent Venables before leaving to become a head coach.

Stoops says he still expects to use field and boundary cornerbacks, instead of one to always cover the left side of the field and the other to cover the right.

Perhaps the biggest difference for him is how much the Big 12’s offenses have changed since he left eight years ago.
