LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) — The skeletons of French and Indian War soldiers unearthed in an upstate New York village in the 1950s were on exhibit for decades, then supposedly buried for good nearly 20 years ago.
It turns out these particular bones didn’t stay put.
A behind-the-scenes decision in 1993 led to most of the rare collection of 18th-century human skeletons winding up in the Southwest.
Almost two decades after being told the skeletons were reburied, people around Lake George are learning that most of the skeletal remains left the fort years ago and haven’t been returned.
Now, many say, it’s time to bring them home to the real-life setting depicted in “The Last of the Mohicans.”
