Emily Gunderson scored three points, but the last one was big. Her free throw with 6.7 seconds remaining extended the Hawks’ season with a victory in a Class 2A Greater St. Helens League tiebreaker at Washougal High School.

R.A. Long (8-11) led by as many as 16 points in the third quarter before Hockinson (10-11) battled back, starting with a 15-4 advantage in the third period.

“We just dominated after that,” said Hockinson assistant coach Casey Rogalette. “We started attacking the basket and kicking out, so either we got a layin, a foul or a kickout for an easy shot.”

Jenna Haagen scored eight of her game-high 16 points in that pivotal third quarter. Maggie Smith and Katelyn McGuire each added 10 points for the Hawks.

Sarah Luedke scored 13 points and MaKayla Bradshaw added 12 for the Lumberjacks, but neither scored in the third quarter as the Hawks focused their defensive efforts on the pair.

R.A. Long’s rushed attempt at a 3-pointer at the buzzer missed the hoop.

Hockinson next faces the loser of Wednesday’s game between W.F. West and River Ridge. The game will be at 7 p.m. Friday on the opponent’s home floor.
