SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) — Chris Eversley scored 18 points, and Jamal Johnson’s layup with 37 seconds left proved to be the game-winner in Cal Poly’s 77-74 victory over UC Irvine on Saturday night.
Johnson scored just four points, but his shot gave the Mustangs (15-11, 6-6 Big West) a 75-73 lead. Adam Folker, who scored 20 points for the Anteaters (9-16, 5-7), was fouled with 20 seconds to play and made his first free throw, but missed a second that would have tied the game.
Cal Poly’s Will Donahue then made two foul shots, and Derick Flowers’ tying 3-point attempt in the closing seconds was off the mark.
Michael Wilder scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, for Irvine, which erased a 13-point halftime deficit but could never take the lead.
David Hanson had 15 points and Drake U’u 10 for Cal Poly, which has yet to have a player score 20 points this season.
