TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Harry Carson has ruled out running for Congress as a Democrat in New Jersey.

The 58-year-old retired New York Giant tells The Associated Press on Wednesday that he just doesn’t have the passion he thinks is needed to run for office.

Democratic officials begged Carson to run against five-term Republican U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett in a northern New Jersey district, and Carson says he had been considering it. He told Bergen County Democratic officials late Tuesday that he had decided not to run.

Carson spent his entire professional career playing for the Giants. He played from 1976 to 1988.

Since retiring, he has worked in sports broadcasting and started a sports consulting and promotions company.
