LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) — The mayor of La Grande has apologized for his choice of words in Facebook posts critical of same-sex unions.

Daniel Pokorney told a forum of about 150 people at that he hadn’t meant to be hurtful but wanted to express himself on important issues.

The La Grande Observer reports (http://bit.ly/AvjgzZ) that in one post last week, Pokorney called Washington the “latest state to transition to Sodom and Gomorrah.” In another, he criticized New Jersey for continuing what he called the “abomination of same sex unions.”

Washington legalized gay marriage this month. New Jersey has granted the legal protections under the label of civil unions rather than marriage.

Most at the forum on Monday said it was inappropriate for an elected official to speak out in such a manner.
