Questions threaten sport institute’s legacy

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Institute for International Sport was created in Rhode Island in 1986 to foster global goodwill through sportsmanship but now it faces tough questions about its finances and management.

Since its founding, the institute’s World Scholar-Athlete Games have brought together thousands of young student athletes from around the world and featured dignitaries including former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

But a state audit says the institute can’t account for how it spent most of a $575,000 state grant, and the institute has acknowledged that a signature on an annual report purported to be that of philanthropist and ex-Hasbro Inc. CEO Alan Hassenfeld appears forged. State police searched the institute’s offices on Wednesday.

Daniel Doyle, the institute’s founder, did not respond to requests for comment Friday.
