JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for an “inflammatory speech” about Jerusalem.
Speaking in Qatar, Abbas charged that Israel was intending to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third-holiest site. The mosque sits on top of the remains of the two biblical Jewish temples.
Netanyahu said Abbas should “not disseminate lies and incitement.”
Jerusalem is the most sensitive issue at the core of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
Tensions flared in Jerusalem over the weekend.
One Palestinian was killed, and 11 Israeli police officers were injured.
Netanyahu made the remarks Sunday after Abbas’s speech in Qatar.
