It is unfortunate that the Hilton Vancouver Washington is less profitable than expected, and thus utilizing lodging taxes, which could help with other events in town.
Another of the hotel’s impacts has been the imminent destruction of a downtown historic building the Lucky Lager Brewery Warehouse, which I own. The design of the behemoth parking garage for the Columbia River Crossing project was spread out onto two blocks (instead of one, as originally planned), so that guests of a few rooms in the Hilton would not have their view blocked of Mount Hood.
That design decision, made by city of Vancouver staff, makes no sense.
Why is the city subsidizing an unprofitable business with the goal of creating jobs, while simultaneously taking actions which result in the demolition of a historic building with 12 businesses and more than 75 employees?
