One of the students in a crash involving a bicycle that hit a student on foot near Cascade Middle School on Friday is believed to be a patient at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland.
Kalen Ekiek is listed in serious condition, a Legacy spokeswoman said Monday night.
Vancouver firefighters rushed to the scene at 3 p.m. Friday, said Capt. Dave James with the Vancouver Fire Department.
The students were a sixth-grader and a seventh-grader, but Monday night, Vancouver police had not sent a bulletin telling the names of the students, how the crash occurred or which student was on the bike.
One of the students suffered life-threatening injuries and was unconscious; the other student suffered less serious injuries, James said.
A firefighter-paramedic rode in the ambulance to help AMR Northwest paramedics keep the critically injured student alive during the ride to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, James added. The student was later transferred to the children’s hospital.
Friday night, Vancouver police Cpl. Chad Williams said the student on the bike had been riding downhill in the parking lot along Northeast 138th Avenue when he hit the pedestrian.
The pedestrian suffered critical injuries; the bicyclist suffered a broken arm, Williams said.
On Monday, grief counselors were available to help students, school district spokeswoman Carol Fenstermacher said.
Parents of both students were notified. The name of the other student — and how the crash occurred — were not available from police Monday night.
