TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Former NFL cornerback Darnell Walker Sr. has been hired as an assistant coach at Tulsa, where he will be able to mentor his son.

Walker was hired Tuesday as the new cornerbacks coach for the Golden Hurricane. The former cornerback for the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions had been the defensive backs coach for Southwest Baptist (Mo.) for the past three years.

His son, Darnell Jr., signed with Tulsa in February.

Coach Bill Blankenship says he became impressed with Darnell Sr. during the recruiting process and believes the eight-year NFL veteran is “an excellent teacher of the game.”

Darnell Sr. played his college ball at Oklahoma. He replaces Van Malone, who left to join Oklahoma State’s staff.
