MATTAWA, Wash. (AP) — The Grant County sheriff says two recent haystack fires near the central Washington community of Mattawa are believed to be arsons. The fires caused more than $100,000 in damage.

The first fire, in a stack of straw, happened Dec. 20 while the second destroyed two stacks of alfalfa hay on Dec. 29.

Sheriff Tom Jones says deputies are seeking information about any suspicious people or vehicles seen in the area or any evidence of attempts to start fires near other haystacks.
