Barthel upsets Medina Garrigues in 2nd round

HOBART, Australia (AP) — German qualifier Mona Barthel upset second-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-1, 6-4 Wednesday to move into the quarterfinals of the Hobart International, a tuneup for next week’s Australian Open.

Barthel will play defending champion Jamila Gajdisova, the No. 5 seed who beat Australian Fed Cup teammate Anastasia Rodionova 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in the second round.

Sixth-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel beat Sacha Jones 7-6 (7), 6-4 to move into a quarterfinal match against Anna Chakvetadze of Russia.

In the other quarterfinals Thursday, top-seeded Yanina Wickmayer takes on Simona Halep and Sorana Cirstea takes on Angelique Kerber.
