NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s National Anti Doping Agency is alarmed by the increasing use of performance enhancers, saying it caught 11 school athletes for using banned substances at a junior meet this month.
NADA director-general Rahul Bhatnagar told The Associated Press on Thursday he was shocked at the high percentage of those testing positive, as 11 out of 81 samples taken at the National School Games confirmed drug use.
Five boxers, three wrestlers and three weightlifters tested positive for substances on the banned list, including the steroid stanozolol, the stimulant methylhexeanamine, and diuretic furosemide.
The results come less than a month after India banned seven athletes for doping, including three gold medal winners from the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
