MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Police shot and killed a man who waved a knife at officers on the front porch of a home in Medford.

Medford Police Chief Tim George says officers had responded to a 911 call Sunday afternoon from the man who was threatening suicide. George says officers first tried to use a stun gun, but after that failed, shots were fired.

The dead man is identified as 18-year-old Elias Angel Ruiz. Oregon State Police are leading the investigation of his death.

The Mail Tribune reports (http://is.gd/NDUHqx ) it was the second fatal law enforcement shooting this month. On Jan. 5, U.S. marshals shot 20-year-old fugitive James “Jimmy” Georgeson outside a grocery store. He was a career criminal with drug and mental health problems and had a history of assaulting police officers.
