INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The first time Steve Weatherford rolled through the New York Giants locker room with a laundry cart, collecting castoff tennis shoes and cleats, he made sure to tell teammates he wasn’t selling their stuff on eBay.
Quite the contrary.
The Giants punter ships his teammates’ old shoes back to his hometown of Terre Haute, Ind., with the latest care package arriving Wednesday. Collecting the shoes is a “no-brainer,” Weatherford says. The poverty rate in Terre Haute is double the state average, and 54 percent of the kids in the school district are on fee-reduced lunches.
People in his hometown have always supported and encouraged him, Weatherford says, and this is his way of repaying them.
