WASHINGTON (AP) — Roger Clemens’ lawyer says a victory in court should win over some of the fans convinced the former pitcher used performance-enhancing drugs.
But Rusty Hardin tells The Associated Press that Clemens’ reputation will always be tainted by drug-related allegations, even though a jury found him not guilty of lying to Congress about steroids and human growth hormone.
Clemens adamantly denied using either substance at a 2008 congressional hearing and added that “no matter what we discuss here today, I’m never going to have my name restored.”
Hardin says that’s still the case.
Hardin says Clemens “is not naive,” and “if 85 percent thought he was guilty before, then this verdict might move the needle to 50 percent.”
