CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Dillon Overton took a five-hitter into the ninth and Jack Mayfield tripled with the bases loaded Sunday night, leading Oklahoma to a 5-4 victory against Virginia and knocking the top-seeded hosts out of the Charlottesville Regional.
Overton (6-3) struck out 11, walked two and left with one out in the ninth after allowing two one-out hits and a run. Kindle Ladd finished, surviving a lazy pop to short right that fell as two runs scored. He got a grounder to end it.
Oklahoma (40-23), which eliminated Army earlier, will play Appalachian State on Monday in the championship. The Sooners will need to win two straight to reach the super regional. The Mountaineers are in their first tournament in 26 years.
Virginia (39-29-1) lost two one-run games, falling 6-5 to the Mountaineers earlier Sunday.
Matt Oberste homered for the Sooners, and Caleb Bushyhead had an RBI single in the seventh.
