Local students make president’s list at Gonzaga
Local students earned placement on the Gonzaga University president’s list for spring semester 2012. Students must earn a 3.7 to 4.0 GPA to make the list.
They include Emily Thomas and Chase Thorson of Camas.
Banks selected as Aerospace Scholar
The Washington Aerospace Scholars program has selected Joshua Banks from Washougal High School as a participant in one of the four WAS Summer Residency sessions held in June and July at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
W.A.S. is a competitive educational program for high school juniors from across Washington State.
These scholars are among the 160 students who qualified for the program from 297 students who applied in November.
To qualify for the residency program, they spent five months studying a NASA-designed, distance-learning curriculum via the Internet and have been selected to attend one of the four residencies hosted at The Museum of Flight this summer based on their academic performance on the distance-learning lessons.
During the residency experience, they will collaborate with the other participants on the design of a human mission to Mars. WAS scholars are guided by professional engineers, scientists, university students and certified educators.
The WAS program is designed to inspire students to pursue degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering and math, but the students are divided into teams which also require them to learn about mission management, budgets, the legal aspects of space exploration and medicine.
In addition to the design of the human mission to Mars, they and the other WAS scholars will also participate in a number of hands-on engineering challenges.
These challenges included design, construction and deployment of robotic rovers, model rockets, lander devices and payload lofting systems.
Summer residency participants will also receive briefings from experts in the fields of engineering, science, physics, medicine, project management, risk management and space exploration.
They will also visit Everett, Wash., for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Boeing Commercial Airplane assembly plant, tour Aerojet’s Redmond facilities, and the engineering laboratories at the University of Washington.
Dyehouse named to dean’s list
Robert Dyehouse has been named to the dean’s list at the Bible College of Multnomah University for the spring semester.
He is a Camas resident.
Community Coalition meeting set
There will be a Washougal Community Coalition meeting Thursday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the East County Family Resource Center, 1702 “C” St.
The purpose is to define and implement the different aspects of a healthy community. Washougal has been selected for a statewide grant that will focus on prevention and intervention.
It is one of two cities in Clark County, and 12 in the state, that were chosen for the 4-year Prevention Redesign Initiative.
The grant itself involves a three-step process: The first is to meet and set goals, the second is to gather data to find out what needs in the community should be addressed, and the third is to implement the plan.
