OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Matt Grevers will be swimming the final of the 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic trials.
USA Swimming announced after the semifinals that Grevers, a backstroke specialist, had scratched from the final despite being the third-fastest qualifier. But a statement Friday says the governing body received “bad information” and he did not drop out. That means Grevers will be swimming the evening final, not second alternate David Walters.
Ryan Lochte did scratch from the final to focus on two of his better events: the 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley. That moved first alternate Jason Lezak into the final of the 100 free.
Grevers already qualified for the Olympic team by winning the 100 backstroke.
