STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Top Stanford associate head coach and former longtime Santa Clara coach Dick Davey is retiring after the season.
The 69-year-old Davey, in his fourth season coaching the Cardinal under Johnny Dawkins, announced his decision Tuesday.
Davey is considered an old-school coach known for his teaching and mentoring style. Before starting at Stanford, he was known for sporting argyle sweaters. He treasured hanging out with his grandchildren after games. He was one of only five head coaches at Santa Clara since 1950.
Davey owns a 251-190 career record. He had four 20-win seasons and guided the Broncos to the NCAA tournament three times. At Santa Clara, his wins trail only Carroll Williams — Davey’s predecessor who coached at the school from 1970-92 and has a school-record 344 victories.
