EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — The Port of Everett says a ship loaded with logs this week is the first full log shipment the port has handled since 2002.
The ship is carrying the equivalent of about 1,300 truckloads of logs to China where they will be chipped and turned into composite board.
The broker that organized the shipment, Eric Warren of Forest Marketing Enterprises, told The Daily Herald (http://is.gd/qlC7n3 ) about a quarter of the timber comes from small landowners who cleared trees from their property. Warren says the China shipment also helps sustain local loggers and truckers, given the recent decisions to close mills in Arlington and Snohomish.
The logs were floated in the Snohomish River to the port’s marine terminal and loaded by longshoremen using cranes.
