SEATTLE (AP) — An emergency repair is under way on one of the 58 cables anchoring the Highway 520 floating bridge in Lake Washington, after a diver discovered corrosion.

The Transportation Department says the bridge between Seattle and Bellevue is safe, but the corrosion to an anchor plate and pin could cause the cable to fail in a windstorm.

Divers discovered the problem Thursday during an inspection. It will take up to four days to repair.

Coincidentally, the bridge will be closed this weekend while workers remove an overpass on the east side. It’s part of the work to replace the 49-year-old bridge with a new floating bridge.
