Search turns up tracks, but no wolves in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah wildlife officials say four wolves or wolf-dog hybrids spotted by a coyote-control crew near Springville last week were not found during an air search, but tracks were spotted.

A crew under contract with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources followed five sets of tracks during “an exhaustive search” on Friday, but was unable to locate the animals because of sporadic snow conditions on the ground.

Agency spokesman Mark Hadley says while crew members followed the tracks, they spotted the carcasses of three big game animals they believe the canines had been feeding on.

Provo’s Daily Herald and The Salt Lake Tribune report that state wildlife biologists will try to find scat near the carcasses whose DNA may determine whether the animals are wolves or wolf-dog hybrids.
