Letter: Top 20 percent pay their fair share

The Columbian
Published: May 5, 2012, 5:00pm

If your household income is in the bottom 20 percent of Americans, for every $1 of taxes you pay you get $8.21 of government services.

If your household income is in the middle 60 percent of Americans, for every $1 of taxes you pay you get $1.30 of government services.

If your household income is in the top 20 percent of Americans, for every $1 of taxes you pay you get 47 cents of government services.

I just wanted to take the time to thank the top 20 percent income earners for paying our way.

I also would appreciate if our elected leaders would do their level best to spend the money wisely so we can maximize services and not add any more burden to the people who are already paying more than their fair share.
