JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — The Army named Maj. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza on Friday to command a new division headquarters at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Lanza is currently the Army’s chief of public affairs. He’ll assume command of the 7th Infantry Division Headquarters when the unit is reactivated Oct. 1.
The News Tribune reports (http://is.gd/AKGnXb ) it will be the first division headquarters at JBLM in more than 20 years. It will not deploy. Its role is to provide oversight for personnel, equipment, training and readiness of three Stryker infantry brigades, an artillery brigade and a combat aviation brigade — about 17,000 soldiers.
The two-star Lanza will be the second highest-ranking Army general at the base, after three-star Lt. Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, who is in now in Afghanistan with the I (First) Corps.
