INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indianapolis eighth-grader has outlasted more than 200 other middle school students to win the Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition.

Chad Qian (CHEE’-ahn) of the Sycamore School won Friday by correctly answering the following problem: A bag of coins containing only pennies, nickels and dimes, with at least five of each, has how many different combined values if five coins were selected at random? Qian answered 21.

Qian won an $8,000 scholarship and a trip to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. Ashwin Sah of Portland, Ore., won a $6,000 scholarship for taking second place.

Contest spokesman Scott Montminy says Qian is the second Indiana student to win in three years. Mark Selke of West Lafayette won in 2010.
