Vancouver police have arrested a juvenile in connection with a string of fires in the Carter Park neighborhood between April 21 and 28.

The juvenile was arrested on suspicion of six counts of second-degree reckless burning and one count of second-degree arson, according to a Vancouver police news release. The suspect’s name and age were not disclosed.

Investigators with Vancouver police’s Fire-Arson Unit processed tips that came in from the community after Fire Corps and Neighbors on Watch volunteers distributed around 600 arson awareness flyers in the area, police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said in the release.

Arson cases are hard to solve because catching someone red-handed is rare and many clues are damaged in the fire, Kapp said.

The Fire-Arson Team investigated 54 fires in 2011. There are seven deputy fire marshals and three police officers on the team.
