MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — A judge is expected to decide whether the gunman who killed a sheriff’s deputy and five other people during a 2008 spree should be moved from a state psychiatric hospital to prison.
The Seattle Times reports (http://is.gd/DRDQAe ) that the Department of Social and Health Services is trying to take advantage of a new law that allows it to petition for a patient’s transfer to prison.
Isaac Zamora has been at Western State Hospital. In an unusual deal with prosecutors, he pleaded guilty in 2009 to four of the killings, but was found not guilty by reason of insanity for the other two.
A Skagit County Superior Court judge has scheduled a trial for next month to rule on the request.
