Police arrested a man for allegedly setting bushes and the basement of his Rose Village house on fire.

The man, Colby L. Aplin, 25, of Vancouver was arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson, said Kim Kapp, Vancouver police spokeswoman.

Police responded to reports that a male resident of a home at 3102 M St. was trying to set bushes on fire just before midnight Monday, according to emergency dispatch logs.

When police arrived they found smoke coming from the basement and called the Vancouver Fire Department, Kapp said.

Firefighters arrived and found the man having an unspecified medical problem outside the home, said Capt. Dave James, Vancouver Fire spokesman. Crews treated the man and put out a small fire in the basement.

Aplin was arrested after an investigation by police and a Vancouver fire marshal.
